A Snap-Shot of the Trinitarian OT
Thoughout
the whole of the Scriptures the Living God is portrayed as a lively community
of Persons working as one for salvation.
There are other OT examples I could have chosen but here are 16
off the top of my head. Look up
the surrounding contexts for full effect:
The One who effects salvation is from the LORD, but He also
IS the LORD:
The Voice of the LORD God (Gen 3:8) who confronts the sin
of Adam and Eve and pronounces curses and the promise of His incarnate
victory is also the LORD God (Gen 3:9) against Whom they had sinned.
The LORD who appears to Abraham (Gen 18:1) and to Whom
Abraham pleades for Sodom, has the full rights of divine judgement and
mercy, for He is the Judge of all the earth (Gen 18:25). Yet He exercises His divine
prerogative in union with ‘the LORD out of the heavens’ (Gen 19:24).
The Angel of the LORD (Exodus 3:2) in Whom is the ‘Name’ of
the LORD (Exodus 23:21) and Who promises to redeem the people and bring
them to God (Exodus 3:12) is also the great I AM and the
God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exodus 3:6,14).
The Presence of the LORD (Exodus 33:14-15; Deut 4:37) who
delivers Israel and brings them to the promised land is none other than
the Lord Himself (Exodus 34:9; cf. Isaiah 63:9)
The Commander of the LORD’s army (Joshua 5:14) Who fights for
Israel to deliver her, is also the LORD who is worthy of worship (Joshua
5:15; 6:2).
The Son Whom we are to kiss and find refuge in (Psalm 2) is the
Anointed Son of the Father through Whom is exercised all divine rule and
authority.
The most excellent of men who rules the nations as Champion and
King is called ‘Lord’ by His bride, and ‘God’ by His God.
(Psalm 45)
The Wisdom of
God who creates (Proverbs 8:30) and gives new life (i.e.
salvation, 8:35) through granting the Spirit (Proverbs 1:23) is also possessed
by the LORD (Proverbs 8:22).
The government
of God’s righteous Kingdom will be on the shoulders of the Wonderful
Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, (Isaiah 9:6)
yet He is One who is born and through Whom the zeal of the LORD of
hosts will accomplish His work (Isaiah 9:7).
The great I AM,
the first and the last who created the heavens and the earth and who
called Israel (Isaiah 48:12,13), is One who is sent from the Lord GOD
along with His Spirit (Isaiah 48:16).
The LORD’s
great Shepherd King (Jeremiah 23:5) who will establish justice for Him in
the land will be known Himself as ‘the LORD, our righteousness’ (Jeremiah
23:6).
Again the
Shepherd of Ezekiel’s prophesy will be the LORD Himself (Ezekiel 34:12-22),
yet this loving, kingly rule is enacted through the Prince, His Servant
David (Ezekiel 34:23-24) who does all that the LORD is said to do as
Shepherd and who rules for the LORD.
The Possessor
and Rightful Ruler of the Kingdom that shall never pass away is the Son
of Man (Daniel 7:13-14) who inherits the Kingdom from the Ancient of Days
(Daniel 7:9-12).
The Shepherd
who will gather the remnant of Israel is the LORD (Micah 2:12) who will
set at their head a King who is also called ‘LORD’ (Micah 2:13).
The Angel of
the LORD (Zech 2:3) is the LORD (Zech 2:6) and is also honoured by the
LORD Almighty in being sent by Him (Zech 2:8-12). He is the LORD sent from the LORD to
be His people’s King and Glory.
